- <p> DIED. Juan Benet, 65, one of Spain's most important
- contemporary novelists, who because of his expressive narrative
- style was often likened to France's Marcel Proust, Ireland's
- James Joyce and the U.S.'s William Faulkner; of cancer; in
- Madrid. A civil engineer by profession, Benet wrote of the moral
- ruin of Spain, winning the 1969 Biblioteca Breve prize for A
- Meditation, which consists of a single 445-page paragraph, and
- the 1984 Premio de la Critica for Rusty Lances, an ambitious
- work about the Spanish Civil War.
